Join us for our annual Legal Updates Half-Day Session!

Each year Volusia / Flagler SHRM strives to keep our members and community informed regarding recent changes in the legislative landscape that can affect us as employers, employees, and members of the public.

This year, we once again have an exciting lineup of legal experts sharing on a variety of hot topics:

Stewart Subjinski, Partner at Jimerson Birr, P.A. and a Full-Service Business Lawyer in Atlantic Beach, FL will kick off the morning. Stewart handles employment disputes, general commercial litigation, and transactional advisement for clients in various industries. His presentation will provide an overview of the status of Executive Orders related to DEI programs and immigration in an effort to provide employers with an understanding of how such Executive Orders may impact their company’s employment practices.

Next up, we will have Doug Collins is a Partner at Cobb Cole here in Daytona Beach. His topics will include CHOICE Act/Non-Compete Agreements, with a specific focus on new options for employers for non-compete and other restrictive covenants. He will also discuss drug testing and policies, sharing suggestions on how to handle employee marijuana use as public policy shifts.

Finally, Jan Williams and Amanda Simpson, attorneys at Jackson Lewis P.C. will present on wage/hour and independent contractor rules. Lawsuits for overtime violations and independent contractor misclassifications continue trend upwards, with the Gig economy and the healthcare sector particularly impacted. The problems are pervasive, with one study finding that 10-30% of employers misclassify their workers. Learn more and avoid being part of that percentage!

    Attendees will:

    • Gain awareness of some of the new, evolving issues for HR professionals to be on the lookout for
    • Take a deeper dive into select areas of employment law, exploring the most recent developments.
    • Obtain general knowledge employment law and related issues to concrete, practical hypotheticals and cases, drawn court decisions issued in the past year.

This program has been submitted for 3 Professional Development Credits through SHRM, as well as 3 Business Credits through HRCI.
